Your Shopify store needs more traffic first. 1,000 unique visits per month is considered to be the minimum in order to benefit from any kind of conversion optimization. The more traffic the better.

A conversion rate of 3% is generally accepted as the average conversion rate for Shopify stores. Many stores and many industries are able to reach much higher rates with optimization, 5% or even 15% is not unheard of.
It would be worthwhile to research and analyze your customers to try to get more reorders from existing customers. Repeat Customer Insights can perform many of these analyses for you.
This calculator is meant to the help answer that ever present question of:
Do I need more traffic or conversions?
While there’s no easy answer, there are enough rules-of-thumb and industry statistics that can be used to give you a better idea of where to focus.
I need more traffic
The calculator says you need more traffic when it isn’t high enough to use conversation rate optimization. You might get a few orders per month but in order to be able to know for sure if an improvement was good or not, you’d have to wait too long.
In this case, you should focus on more traffic first. Once that’s ticking along then you can focus on conversation rate optimizations.
There are 1,000s of ways to earn or buy more traffic. The important part is to pick one strategy and stick with it in the long-term. Most traffic strategies take time before they start producing consistently.
Common traffic strategies for Shopify stores include:
- Content marketing / blogging
- Social media marketing
- SEO (see my guide to learn all about Shopify SEO)
- PPC search and social media ads
Each one of those strategies includes dozens of different tactics you can use so there’s something for everyone.
(Email marketing isn’t included in the above list because while it’s a great marketing strategy for conversions and building loyal customers, it’s not great at generating top-of-the-funnel traffic. But don’t neglect building a list…)
I need a better conversion rate
If you have enough traffic and need a better conversion rate, you’ll need to work on your store to better win the trust of visitors so they buy.
You have a lot of options available to you for conversion rate optimization but first you need to diagnose where the problem is. Trying to fix your conversions anywhere other than the problem area will waste your time and won’t result in any measurable improvement.
Using software like Google Analytics and heatmaps are usually helpful diagnosis tools. Alternatively you can read what Nick Disabato says on the topic, he has a lot of great resources on conversion rate optimization for Shopify and ecommerce stores.
Lastly, you send your advisers a link to your results so they can have a clear picture of your store. Nothing is saved on a server or anything, the link just pre-fills the form for easy sharing.
