Today I wanted to share a great post on Shopify SEO by a customer, Kevin Stecko.
In Shopify and SEO Kevin writes about three problems most Shopify stores have with SEO. I especially like how he’s skipping the basic SEO advice and instead focused on core things that Shopify does (or doesn’t do):
The next thing to note is that I’m not going to cover generic ecommerce SEO best practices. I’m talking things like naming your products, naming your images, title and meta tags, rich snippets/JSON-LD, etc. If any of these things are unfamiliar to you then you don’t have a Shopify SEO problem, you have an SEO problem.
I agree with all three of his recommendations and have given similar advice to other customers.
Though I need to point out: changing your product/collection urls could have a temporary traffic drop if you’re using the collection version and those urls have aged or gotten Rich Snippets. So be careful and follow the advice of a trustworthy SEO consultant.
At the very least, skim Kevin’s article and see which problems he outlined might be impacting your Shopify store.
One simple improvement you can make now is to get your structured data in order.
Google has been working on Rich Snippets so I bet there’s going to be more search enhancements coming out in 2018 for stores with structured data.
And JSON-LD for SEO is the easiest and safest option in the Shopify app store to automatically add that data.
