Shopify SEO: the fundamentals are important to get right

Recently a customer emailed asking about how to get started with SEO with their new Shopify store.

The SEO fundamentals like the title, description, and plenty of content are important. It’s common to under-estimate how important those are.

Once you’ve done that, the other major fundamental component is building links to your store (called backlinks or link building). That’s a difficult and time-consuming process but it’s very important. If you ever hire an SEO consultant, this is what most of them spend their time on (and why they cost a lot).

All websites have to do that stuff above in order to do well with SEO. But there are a lot of other things that can help too.

Structured data and JSON-LD is one of those extra, optional things.

The nice thing about JSON-LD for SEO is that it doesn’t require any coding or ongoing work. So even though it helps in an optional way, since it’s automatic and "just works" it can be a nice additional boost.

Google and other search engines have also been increasing the importance of structured data so the stores that have it now will be ahead of their competitors in the future.
